CNN writer-producer says he is the victim of race discrimination

A writer-producer at CNN has filed a case against the newsroom in a federal court outside of Florida. He claims that CNN discriminated against him because of his race. He began working for CNN in 2010 and, according to his lawsuit, is the only black male in his position that works on any CNN programs that are made by CNN World Headquarters.

The 51-year-old alleges that if he wanted to increase his skill set, he would have to do it on his own time. He claims that white employees were given the opportunity to have on-the job-training so that they would be paid while they were learning. Employees who were able to learn a sought-after skill would have the opportunity for higher ranking and higher paying jobs. The plaintiff says he was refused the chance to learn on the job.

The plaintiff filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about his treatment, but he claims he faced retaliation. A few weeks after he filed, the man tried to get a promotion, but he was not chosen. He claims that a white worker was given the job, but this person did not have nearly the qualifications or experience that he did. Additionally, when the plaintiff received discipline, he purports that white employees who did the same thing got away with it.

Additionally, the plaintiff alleges this is not the first time that a black man was forced out of a role based on race at CNN. He says that his former direct supervisor lost his job after he filed a complaint with the EEOC. The plaintiff is seeking at least $500,000 in damages for his ordeal. It is illegal for Florida employers to base their decisions for hiring, firing and promoting on any legally protected status. Aggrieved workers can have their cases evaluated by an employment law attorney to determine how best to move forward.
