Lawsuit claims woman was fired due to her pregnancy

Florida employees are protected by various laws related to employment and human rights. Some employers retaliate when workers have legitimate reasons for being away from work or needing accommodation such as light duty. A lawsuit was recently filed in another state, alleging wrongful termination because of pregnancy.

According to the court documents, the plaintiff started working for the defendant six years ago. Her duties included moving and lifting heavy boxes and the operation of a forklift. The plaintiff contends she advised her employer of her pregnancy in the spring of 2015. Her doctor apparently restricted her activities to light duty, preventing her from carrying out the mentioned duties.

The complaint states that the plaintiff was advised to spend a week on temporary bed rest starting on Oct. 30. She alleges that the general manager of the defendant called her five days later to inform her that she was being dismissed. She asserts that she was later told that her employment would be terminated on her date to return to work. When she advised the defendant that she would return in January, she was allegedly informed that her termination date would be Jan. 22.

Women in Florida who experience gender discrimination at their places of work have the right to take legal action. Termination of employment due to pregnancy is a violation of any woman's human rights. Legal battles against large companies may seem overwhelming, but victims of such discrimination need not navigate such lawsuits on their own. An experienced employment law attorney can fight for a client's rights and do whatever is possible to obtain a suitable result -- regardless of whether reinstatement or only fair restitution is sought.
