Many Florida residents know that presenting a different outward appearance can lead to some difficulties. Discrimination is still an unfortunately prevalent issue, and individuals who have obvious differences are sometimes the most at risk of being the victim of such actions. However, discriminatory practices should not be tolerated at a place of employment especially, and if an employee feels that they were treated unfairly, filing a complaint may not be an unthinkable action.
A Muslim-American man took such action after he felt he had been treated poorly at his place of employment. He claimed that he was harassed and discriminated against due to his appearance and race. As a result, he filed a lawsuit against his former employer in order to seek compensation for being treated unfairly.
The man had apparently worked for the same company for over a decade and a half when he was terminated from his position for reportedly refusing to start working before his shift actually began. The man felt that this was only further discrimination against him as he had already allegedly endured other harassing behaviors. His case recently came to an end, and a jury awarded the man $1.2 million dollars due to the discrimination he faced.
As this situation indicates, discrimination is not a thing of the past. Many workers find themselves in such situations too often. Luckily, this case also shows that workers can take legal action if they feel that they have been treated unfairly in the workplace. If Florida workers feel that they have been discriminated against while on the job, they may wish to look into state employment laws to learn more and better assess their situation.
